I'm Feeling Sad
"You can't just have you characters saying how they feel. That makes me feel angry!"
This blog site has a fancypants new setup so I figured I should test it out. It's confusing to me right now but I assume I'll get used to it.
I don't really feel like getting into why I'm feeling sad. 'Cause at first I was thinking it was just one of those general no-real-reason sads, but it's not. It's about a boy. And I feel like a damn stupid teenager. But that's the way things go, I guess. And that's all I'm going to say about it.
And I think I'm going to go watch Natural Born Killers.
... Actually, that's probably a terrible idea. "I'm sad about a boy. I think I'll watch a love story."
Fuck you, it is too a love story.
And I should probably pick something else to watch. Nothing else sounds good, though.
Actually, I should pick something I can doze off to, not something I'd want to pay attention to. If I'm going to rewatch Natural Born Killers I'm going to want to pay attention to it. 'Cause it's great. Seriously, more directors should try to get Quentin Tarantino to disown their movies if this is the end result.
I mean, yeah, that would mean more directors would have to make movies based on scripts Quentin Tarantino wrote, and I have a feeling he doesn't let people who aren't him direct his scripts anymore (because of Natural Born Killers) but ... what was I talking about?
Oh yeah. Tarantino bugs me. Stupid Mac Tonight.
And if I'm not going to put on Natural Born Killers, then what am I going to watch? Disney movies are usually pretty good to doze off to, but I don't have a lot of those. I refuse to try to fall asleep to Hunchback because it's the best thing Disney ever did and if I'm going to watch that movie, I'm going to freaking watch it. I've discovered I can't fall asleep to Robin Hood for some reason and so I think that leaves me with just Sleeping Beauty and The Emperor's New Groove, both of which I'm kind of tired of because they're the Disney movies I turn to when I get tired of putting on The Simpsons to fall asleep. I think I might still have The Sword In The Stone but last time I watched it I realized I don't like that movie much anymore. And the whole thing with the girl squirrel falling in love with the Merlin squirrel breaks my heart. It always has.
When I was a kid and we'd go to rent movies, I'd always take forever to choose because right when I thought I'd decided on something, I'd remember all the scenes in the movie I hated and none of the good parts, which would make me not want to rent it after all. And when it came to The Sword In The Stone, it was always the memory of the girl squirrel crying when Merlin turned back into a human that always made me put the tape back and choose, like, Soapdish or something instead.
For Adventures In Babysitting it was usually the shot of the bad guy stuck out the window of the skyscraper pathetically asking for help, and I think that's an easily avoidable after-the-credits scene. Still, though, it made me too upset to want to watch the movie.
I hate the part at the end of The Dead Zone when you find out what happens to one particular character. A character who is entirely despicable, I might add. But he looks so unbelieveably sad (and then it gets worse) and it just doesn't matter how awful he is. It hurts me to see it. I won't watch that scene.
It's weird that I can watch horror movies and see people get horribly murdered in violent, creative and gory ways, and laugh my head off the whole way through them. Maybe because there's something about them that causes a disconnect, like I always know that this is a movie and these are actors playing characters and nobody is unhappy or getting hurt. I don't know. But I feel like that doesn't matter or shouldn't matter or something.
Because generally, if I'm watching a movie and something strikes me just the right (or wrong) way, it destroys me. Like that scene at the end of The Dead Zone or the sad girl squirrel in The Sword In The Stone, or Barbossa dropping the apple he couldn't possibly have been holding if it were real life (what with all the swordfighting and all): if a character is sad or hurt or whatever, it ruins me.
My little brother once showed me a secret move on a swordfighting video game. He told me certain buttons to press to attack his character, and I did. It caused his character to collapse and a little subtitle came up where he basically said that the pain was too much and begged me to kill him. And I sat there and cried for a very long time and my mom had to get mad at him. "Why would you show her that?!"
I'm an oversensitive little twerp and, while I've gotten better at hiding it as time goes by, I've never been able to not be an oversensitive little twerp who, as my friend Lauren put it, has the ability to physically feel other people's emotional pain. Basically, I have the world's shittiest superpower.
And I don't really know why I'm talking about it. Other than I'm feeling sad and when I feel sad I ramble about my mystical sadness abilities.
It sucks when I get into this kind of mood, because I was thinking at the end of this post I could embed a Youtube video of a song that never fails to cheer me up, but when I feel like this I conveniently forget every song that makes me feel happy. Thanks a lot, brain. Thanks for being there for me in my time of need.
And I still don't know what movie to put on to try to fall asleep to. 'Cause live action doesn't work for some reason; it has to be animated. I love The Simpsons Movie but I try to only watch it when I'm sick (the movie equivalent of chicken soup, I guess?). Usually I put on DVDs of The Simpsons (TV show) but I've been through all of those so many times I just don't want to get sick of them. I need more seasons.
I just finished rewatching the first three seasons of Metalocalypse in preparation of season four premiering on Sunday (YAY!) but that show is impossible to fall asleep to. Home Movies usually works but it didn't last night and I'm just not in the mood right now. What else is there?
Why am I asking you? You don't even exist. Nobody reads this blog.
According to the page it shows me when I log in, this blog had two thousand one hundred eleven views. I find that very hard to believe. Unless all of them are me.
All right, I guess I'll wrap it up and actually go over and look at my movies and figure out where to go from there. Wish me luck!
Be seeing you.

The Devil's Carnotdull
If you'd like to read a sort of but not really in depth story about how my concerns that I wouldn't like The Devil's Carnival were unfounded, you may.
The short version is, I loved it. Not as much as Repo!, but at the moment I find it more exciting than Repo! because it is new to me. That's the way things go.
I have to admit that the song that plays through most of the first short teaser they released had a tendency to get stuck in my head. Here it is in its entirity:
I'm becoming a bit obsessed with the song. But I will say most of the music in the movie is more boistrous than this (in fact, In All My Dreams I Drown is the song played during the end credits and doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the film. Not that there's anything wrong with that).
Be seeing you.

Duncan Hines Frosting Irritations
I've been seeing a commercial on television lately for Duncan Hines Frosting Creations (that isn't a link to the commercial I've been seeing, but it is a handly dandy reference guide for the following ramble) and I have become completely obsessed with them in an annoyed, baffled sort of way.
(I'd like to point out that, in the middle of typing that sentence, Food Network showed the commercial. Coincidental!)
Before I begin, let me state outright that I am not endorsing Frosting Creations in any way and I urge you not not buy the product. I want Duncan Hines to fail in this particular venture, and I want them to fail spectacularly.
Let me explain the premise of the product: Frosting Creations come in two parts, a can of "frosting starter" (also known as a can of "plain frosting") and a packet of flavoring. Consumers add the packet of flavoring to the frosting starter and mix it up into a "unique" flavor. (Never mind the fact that these are all flavors that exist elsewhere in the world, thus negating their use of the word "unique".)
Because I'd be wondering, here's a list of their flavors:
Bubble Gum
Caramel
Cherry Vanilla
Chocolate Almond
Chocolate Marshmallow
Cinnamin Roll
Cotton Candy
Mint Chocolate
Mocha
Orange Cream (which they spell "Creme" but I'm not pretentious)
Strawberry Shortcake
White Chocolate Raspberry
Now, to be honest, some of those sound like good frosting flavors. I'd even eat some of them.
So why the fuck doesn't Duncan Hines just sell those flavors of frosting? They obviously have the technology to make them. Plus, I, along with many other people, hate making my own frosting (one of the many reasons I didn't pursue work as a pastry chef) and I'm all about pre-made frosting. I don't need to feel like I'm part of the process when it comes to canned frosting and I would rather get a pre-made Chocolate Almond frosting than a Chocolate Almond frosting with some assembly required.
So why, Duncan Hines. WHY is this product a thing?
The obvious answer is: it's a money grab. Of course it's a money grab. Why have consumers give us money for one product when we can get them to pay for two? Duncan Hines is a business, it wants your money and Frosting Creations, by virtue of being "new" and "different" and possibly even "innovative" (bullshit, by the way), is going to get it for them.
The reason I refuse to just write the whole thing off as a money grab and forget the whole matter is: that answer is too obvious. Like I just said, it's a blatant excuse to get people to pay for two products instead of one. You don't even have to think about it to realize that's what's going on; it's instinctual.
So there must be a deeper, more interesting and possibly even sinister reason. There has to be. Yes, it's still a money grab, but there has to be more to it than that.
So I hate Frosting Creations but I am obsessed with them and I'm determined to uncover their horrible secret.
Be seeing you.

May The Sound Of Our Contaminated Beat Sweep All Them Nazi Purists Off Their Feet
Have I mentioned that I love Gogol Bordello? I love Gogol Bordello. Like, broke-my-think-about-it-for-at-least-a-year-before-getting-a-tattoo-of-it-rule love them. They are ... indescribeable. The way this music makes me feel has no words; it's just pure something and it fills me with energy and joy and every synonym for joy.
Gogol Bordello, along with They Might Be Giants and at least a few Mike Patton projects, are absolutely perfect. They are what they are and that is that.
Anyway, here's their new video. With a lead-in like that it's almost guaranteed to be a letdown. For you, anyway. I wasn't let down at all.
Be seeing you.

The Devil's Carnidull
It's no secret I'm a huge fan of Repo! The Genetic Opera. It was one of the few movies that I hyped myself up for to a ridiculous degree that not only met my expectations, but shoved my expectations into a mud puddle as it stormed past.
What I'm saying is, Repo! is fucking brilliant. If you get the chance, you should watch it. (Just don't go see it in a theater with a shadowcast; it's demeaning to the movie and yourself.)
Recently it was announced that Repo! creator and lyricist Terrance Zdunich was reteaming with Repo! director Darren Lynn Bousman to make another musical, a (so I've heard) fifty five minute carnival from Hell picture called The Devil's Carnival.
I really, really want to be excited for this movie. I'm trying very hard. One of my favorite directors, one of the Repo! creators, a fucked up carnival theme, a color scheme similar to those of Repo! and House Of 1000 Corpses, several of the same cast members as Repo! ... I should be stoked!
But so far all I've seen of the movie are this:
which is a decent teaser, but nothing to get too worked up about (I also notice the absence of the name Darren Smith. For those who don't know, Darren Smith was the other co-creator of Repo! The Genetic Opera. Based on what I've heard, he wrote the music and Terrance wrote the lyrics. Maybe it's the lack of Darren's music that's keeping Devil's Carnival uninteresting to me); and this:
which is completely boring and tells me nothing other than "some broad has a nice ass." Who fucking cares? Is that really supposed to sell this movie? Repo! was full of chicks with nice asses, but they didn't use that to attract an audience. This does not bode well.
I don't know. I'm actually really sad that nothing I've seen related to The Devil's Carnival (other than the names of the people involved who also worked on Repo!) has made me at all interested.
It's really tough to want to want to see a movie, but to not actually want to see the movie. Especially when you're a fan of the director and the writer. (And the writer is an acquaintance of yours who you happen to like very much as a human being and whose work you want to support.)
It'll probably be fine in the end. It'll hopefully be an awesome movie and maybe it's a good thing they're keeping my expectations so low.
Or maybe that upcoming official trailer promised at the end of the short teaser will make up for all the lack of enthusiasm I have right now.
Maybe that trailer will live up to this one:
Fuck yes! I already know I love that movie (I've seen it an uncountable number of times) and that preview still makes me completely excited to watch it, like it's something brand new.
Be seeing you.
